HISTORY in English D 2008-2009 Jim Bushby
Aim: By the end of the year students will have a greater understanding of the skills involved in interpreting events of the past. They will look at a variety of sources of events from different times and will try to make their own conclusions as to what happened. They will learn to be detectives and will research, discuss, argue and learn to accept different points of view.
August-December:
Topic : Ancient Greece
Theme: What have the Greeks done for us?
In connection with the Beijing Olympics:
i) Greek roots in English words
ii) Gods/Goddesses
iii) Democracy- citizenship and to compare Greek democracy with our own
iv) Architecture-what remains as evidence of a way of life
v) Famous people- philosophers,generals, politicians
vi) Drama- how life is re-enacted in a play
vii) The Olympics
Follow-up task:
Similarities and differences from Ancient Greece to modern day life.
Evidence of Greek legacy left to us in Copenhagen.
A role-play to recreate A day in the life of….in Ancient Greece.
January-June:
Topic: First World War.
Resource: The Trenches (Schools History Project)
Aims: to understand and analyse events of 1914-1918 through a variety of sources; to investigate what life was really like, separating fact from propaganda; what lessons can we learn from this event.
i) Analysis of sources; how to look at and cross-reference sources; how to check reliability.
ii) Understanding of what life was like in the trenches from the soldiers point of view through a variety of sources; newspapers, diaries, cartoons, letters, poems.
iii) Analysis of war from different perspectives; generals, government.
