Geography in English D

Geography in ED 2009- 2010

Geography is taught as a 3 year scheme of work.

Making Connections between Copenhagen, Denmark and the World.

Introduction to Geography
Where do I live? How am I connected to places? How can I write about places?
Students will learn how to think about places using precise geographical vocabulary, to think about the wider range of areas and links between them, to explain geographical patterns and processes that have been involved in the development of places.

Environmental Risks and Benefits
Students will describe how human activities; consumerism, agriculture, manufacturing industries and energy production may improve the quality of life and or pose threats to the environment. They will identify areas at risk and describe attempts to maintain, conserve or improve the quality of the environment through sustainable development.

Economic Development and the Use of Resources
Case Study China: Students will describe the significance of supplying large amounts of energy to power economic development. They will describe the growing use of renewable energy supplies to alleviate the world’s energy crisis. They will investigate the industrial systems in China with reference to the European markets. Students will investigate how the natural resources of Denmark are used and managed.

Tectonics
Describe and explain where and why earthquakes and volcanoes occur and how people try to manage these hazards.

Comparing Countries
Case studies of the above will be selected as the students focus on different countries around the world that they have lived in or visited
Students will learn
• to ask geographical questions about countries being compared to Denmark
• develop a sequence of investigation
• select relevant info. in order to aid comparison
• present data effectively to highlight similarities and differences
• consider the independence of nations
