Plans for English A 2009-10 Rosemary Plowright

Social studies ( History/Geography/) and Science
All English skills are practised and integrated in the following topics:

Topic 1: Myself and My Family - August to September

Aims :
• to get to know each other and recognise our similarities and differences in order to build up self esteem and be able to work and play together, through discussion and Art and Craft.
• to be able to talk about ourselves to other people
Method:
Each pupil make a book about themselves answering the following questions:
• What do I look like?
• How tall am I?
• How old am I and when is my birthday?
• Where was I born?
• What does my name mean and how did I get it?
• Where do my family come from?
• What languages do I speak?
• What are the flags of these countries like?
• Where are these places on a map?


The books are shared, read to each other and each pupil makes an "English A " book telling something about each pupil. All the work is displayed.


Materials:
Ginn "Sharp Eye" series - Myself
Measuring equipment for height
Large Map of the World
Book of flags
Questionaire about each child completed together at home.




Topic 2 : Families - October
Aims:

To investigate family groups and know that families can have many forms but they always takes care of each other

Method:.
• My Family
We share information about each others families, make family portraits and family trees in order to learn the vocabulary of relations.
• The Danish Royal Family
We will compare our family to the Danish Royal Family and learn a little about each person and what they do: particularly Queen Margarethe.
• Animal Families
Simple classification :mammals, birds, fish, amphibians and reptiles.
Family groups in different environments : Mammals
Observation of animals family groups at the zoo.

Materials:
Photos of ourselves and our families together
Internet search about The Danish Royal Family
Library books about animals
A visit to the Zoo

Topic 3: Seasons - throughout the whole year

Aims:
To see the changes in the natural environment close to the school throughout the school year..

Method:
• The Classes will go for several walks and observe the changes.
• We will adopt 2 or 3 trees in the woods which we will visit regularly, recording the observations we make each time in a class diary.
• We will collect specimens and take them back to the classroom for further investigation.

Materials:
Reference books about Woodland, Ponds, plants and animals.
Digital photos of the area


Topic 4: Clothes and Textiles (November –December)

Aims:
• To look at our clothes and see what they are made of and how they are made
• To make the connection between clothing and climate
• To exam the connection between clothing and culture and to increase the students interest in other cultures through the study clothing

Method

1. Investigation of different types of fibres and sorting them into man-made or from animals or from plants.
2. Looking closely at Wool, Silk, Cotton and a man-made fibre and following the process from source to clothes.
3. Make dressing up dolls and dress them for different climates and different occasions.
4. Collect clothes from different places and make a fashion show.
5. Look at special clothing and materials for special jobs.

Collections of hats, clothes from other countries and photos from our families.
Pictures of footwear for different purposes.
Sewing machines and weaving looms
Knitting and crochet materials.
Video/'dvd of textiles and clothes being made.
A visit to National museum to look and clothes from around the world.
Samples of textiles
Magnifiying glasses and binocular microscopes.
