Writing English in English B August 2009-June 2010 David Plowright

Aims:

Students will be taught to use language to explore their own experiences and imaginary worlds.
They will develop the understanding that writing is essential to thinking and learning and enjoyable in it’s own right.
Selected texts will give structures, themes and purposes for writing, the focused teaching of word and sentence level skills will contribute to the organization and accuracy of writing.
Students will see the writing process modeled by the teacher, take part in whole class, small group and individual writing activities according to their ability. Final drafts of work done will be written on the computer.
Students will practice new spellings, identify mis-spelt words and use a dictionary to find the spelling and meaning of words.

Themes:
Charactors, Settings, Imaginary worlds, Problems,Solving Problems,
Mystery Adventure, Newspaper reports and Poetry.


Pupils should be able to:
- spell accurately the common words read on sight
- chose interesting words and phrases
- find alternatives to and and then
- use the language of time
- structure stories with a beginning, middle and end
- develop stories with a setting, characters and a sequence of events
- begin to use dialogue in stories
- write evaluations of books read

Grammar and Punctuation
Students should:
- write in clear sentences using full stops and capital letters
- use the past, present and future tenses of verbs
- practice using commas to mark out meaning
- learn the use of apostrophes to show possession
- investigate the grammar of different types of sentences; statements,questions
- correct own writing

This year the children are divided into two groups.
Group 1 reads Ginn Levels 4 and 5 and 6.
Group 2 reads Ginn Levels 7 and 8and 9

The skills covered include comprehension, questions requiring written answers or discussions, multiple-choice exercises and sentence completion assignments.
There are many open-ended questions leading to creative work of all kinds, research and a variety of group activities.

The objectives of the activities include vocabulary extension and the development of spelling and written skills. There are crosswords, games and puzzles and other assignments all based on the varied language of the Readers including fiction and non-fiction texts.
