Mathematics in English A
Mathematics plan for EA – Mohini Vohra
Aims
To introduce the processes and language of Mathematics within the areas of Number, Measurement and Shape and Space.

In English A the students start to work at the appropriate level according to their previous experience and knowledge of English Mathematical language.

Students starting school for the first time work through the syllabus below:

Stage 1

Number
To order and recognise the numbers up to 10.
To count forwards to 10, and backwards from 10.
To count ‘one more than’ a set of objects.
To use the symbols ‘+’ and ‘=’.
To recognise repeating patterns.
To add two numbers (total up to 10).
To recognise the numerals up to 20.
To subtract from a number of objects (up to 10).
To recognise ‘one less than’ a number.

Money:
To recognise the coins.
To understand the concept of buying and selling.

Length:
To compare the lengths of two objects.
To compare the heights of two objects.
To measure the length using a non-standard unit.

Weight:
To compare the weights of two objects by feel.

Capacity:
To compare two containers by pouring.
Time:
To recognise the hours on digital and analogue clocks.
To recognise and order the days of the week.
To understand the terms yesterday, today, tomorrow.

2-D shapes:

To recognise and name squares, circles, triangles and rectangles.

3-D shapes:
To recognise and name cubes
To sort 3-D shapes according to whether or not they roll.


Stage 2

Number
To order numbers up to 100.
To count in tens, to count back in tens.
Addition and subtraction up to 20.
Fractions:
To recognise halves and quarters of shapes.
Graphs:
To construct a block graph.
To construct a pictograph.

2-D shapes:

To name squares, circles, rectangles, triangles.
3-D shapes:
To name cubes, cuboids, pyramids, spheres.

Money:
To recognise 1p, 2p, 5p, 10p, 20p, 50p and 1£ coins.
To understand the concept of buying and selling
To give change.
Length:
To measure length using decimeter sticks.
Weight:
To measure weight using non-standard units.
Capacity:
To recognise language associated with capacity (full, half-full, half-empty, empty).
To compare the capacities of a set of containers.

Symmetry:
To create symmetrical patterns.
Time:
To tell the time with digital and analogue clocks; o’clock, half past.
To order the days of the week.
To order the months of the year.
To recognise that there are twenty-four hours in a day.
